Business and Law Outreach

The College of Business and Law invites high school students and teachers to participate in our outreach programme to learn more about business, law and related subjects. Our outreach programme offers you a unique opportunity to expand your understanding of business and law, support your studies and inspire your future career direction.

Activities and events aim to generate interest in the subject matter while developing
real-world enterprising, academic, and community focused skills. Choose from our on-campus events or schedule a package option to suit your class.

Canterbury Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) E-Day

1 March, University of Canterbury
E-Day brings around 300 budding entrepreneurs together to launch the Canterbury Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) competition for the year.

Accounting Day

16 May, University of Canterbury, Year 11 students
Experience Accounting at UC by attending a special lecture, workshop, visit from industry, and meet staff and students. See last year's programme for the day (PDF, 97KB).

Law Day

23 May, University of Canterbury, Year 13 students
An opportunity to meet UC Law staff and students, attend a lecture, specialised workshop and industry visit. See last year's programme for the day (PDF, 99KB).

Criminal Justice Day

13 June, University of Canterbury, Year 13 students
Come and meet Criminal Justice staff and students, attend a lecture, specialised workshop and meet industry guests. See last year's programme for the day (PDF, 100KB).

Business Studies Day

20 June, University of Canterbury, Year 11 students
Learn about progressing from Business Studies to Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship at UC. See last year's programme for the day (PDF, 97KB)

Economics Day

27 June, University of Canterbury, Year 11 students

Scholarship Exam Workshops

19 October (Accounting), University of Canterbury
26 October (Economics), University of Canterbury
After school workshops to help prepare students intending to sit Accounting or Economics scholarship exams.

Junior Breakout Sessions

20 – 24 November, University of Canterbury
Fun activities focused on leadership, entrepreneurship and innovative thinking for Year 9 and 10 students.

Business Simulator Sessions

1 – 2.5 hours, University of Canterbury
An opportunity for your students to step into the shoes of an entrepreneur and run their own virtual business.

Lecture Sit-In

1 – 2 hours, University of Canterbury
Experience first hand what it's like to be a UC Business or Law student and sit in on introductory level courses.

School Visit

Approx. 1 hour, at school
Invite a lecturer to talk to your class.

Moot Court Sessions

1 – 2 hours, University of Canterbury
An opportunity for students to debate current topics from a legal perspective in our Moot Court.

Core Legal Sessions

1 – 2 hours, University of Canterbury or at school
Group discussion and debate on real cases covering core legal topics.

Money Week Sessions

Approx. 1 hour, at school
Financial competency sessions during New Zealand Money Week on topics such as budgeting and saving for your studies.

UC Events for high school students

Events for students and the general community are publicised on the UC Events website. These include information evenings, UC Open Day and public lectures. Check out the Liaison events diary for when Liaison staff will be visiting your area. Look out for UC at the Canterbury Careers Expo and when we're visiting your hometown.

Employment Law scenarios (PDF, 108KB)

A selection of scenarios which encourage students to consider justification in employment law and introduce the Test of justification from the Employment Relations Act of 2000.

Law and Morality - The Case of the Nazi Wife (PDF, 137KB)

An exemplar case and key statues that encourage students to consider the importance of morality in the creation of laws.

Sentencing questions and scenario (PDF, 77KB)

Key questions to help students understand the nature of sentencing and a hypothetical which gives them the opportunity to set a sentence.
